Huskies: Mid-Season Leaders Reports

The No.8 UConn Huskies have had the most interesting and difficult season in their program history. Starting with a roster of 14 to now 11 active players, the team has faced a number of setbacks with injuries. This season has seen upsets against unranked teams and huge conference wins, all with a different active bench each game. This article will look into the updated statistical leaders' sheet and give a perspective on what the players have stood out. (Stats are updated through Feb. 12th).

CATEGORY TEAM LEADER STATS


POINTS PER GAME 

Senior Christyn Williams, Little Rock Arkansas (UConn Athletics)

There has been a change in the points per game leader this season. Till early January, sophomore Paige Bueckers still led the team in PPG. Freshman Caroline Ducharme then became the team's leading scorer, but recently, senior Christyn Williams has had some impactful games. Even though she did not score much against Tenessee last Sunday, Williams is currently averaging 15.4 PPG and leads the team with 278 points overall. Her best game this season was against Minnesota dropping 31 points. 

FIELD GOAL LEADER

Williams is also leading the team in field goals that have been made this season. The percentage leader falls in its own category. One of Williams' favorite moves is the Euro-step layup. The height and length of the 5'11 layups are impressive. She is quick on steals and loves to earn an extra trip to the free-throw line. Williams is currently averaging 6.1 field goals per game. 

FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE LEADER

Senior Olivia Nelson-Ododa, Winder Georgia (UConn Athletics)

While Williams is the leader based on field goals made, senior Olivia Nelson-Ododa has the best field goal made percentage. She averages only 4.1 per game, but she has the cleanest total percentage on the season. Her last few games have shown that Ododa can score on almost every field goal attempt. She was 5-5 against Creighton on Feb. 2nd and 4-4 against Providence. 

THREE-POINTERS FIELD GOAL LEADER

Senior Christyn Williams, Little Rock Arkansas (UConn Athletics)

Williams currently leads the team for three-pointers made this season. She has scored a total of 26 this season (78 points) on 74 attempts. She averages 1.4 made threes per game. Her season-high is 4 made against Villanova this past Wednesday. Williams career-high is 5 made threes against Purdue in her freshman season.

THREE-POINTERS PERCENTAGE LEADER

Freshman Azzi Fudd, Arlington Virginia (UConn Athletics)

Freshman Azzi Fudd has brought a new fire to UConn's offensive scoring abilities. The No.1 freshman recruit recently rejoined the active Huskies roster after missing two months due to an ongoing foot injury. Fudd is averaging 11.8 points per game, averaging 5.6 three-point attempts per game. She scored 7 against Tenneesse in her breakout career game going 7-9 on the arch. Fudd opened up the game scoring a three in the first 13 seconds of that game. 

FREE-THROW LEADER

Senior Evina Westbrook, Salem Oregon (UConn Athletics)

While UConn has not been at the free-throw line much this season, senior Evina Westbrook is typically at the foul line for the Huskies. Playing in all 21 games for the Huskies, Westbrook closely leads the team in free throws made per game. Westbrook, Nelson-Ododa, and Williams all average 1.8 made free-throws, Westbrook has made 37 of her 52 attempts. 

FREE-THROW PERCENTAGE LEADER

Freshman Azzi Fudd, Arlington Virginia (UConn Athletics)

Azzi Fudd has the highest free-throw percentage for the team at .875%. She has made 7 of her 8 attempts, going 3-3 against Villanova this week. Sophomore Aaliyah Edwards is close behind with .842% at the line and freshman Caroline Ducharme at .821%. 

OVERALL REBOUNDS LEADER

Senior Olivia Nelson-Ododa, Winder Georgia (UConn Athletics)

Olivia Nelson-Ododa has led the Huskies in rebounding for the past three seasons. This season, Ododa averages 8.2 rebounds per game both defensively and offensively. She is the reigning Big East Co-Defensive Player of the Year, earned for her tremendous efforts at the post. Ododa has grabbed a total of 156 rebounds this season, 43 on offense and 113 on defense. UConn leads Big East in defensive rebounding.

REBOUNDS LEADER FOR ALL 21 GAMES

Sophomore Aaliyah Edwards, Kingston Ontario (UConn Athletics)

Aaliyah Edwards is one of two Huskies who has played in all 21 games this season. Edwards started for the first 7 games of the season before becoming the sixth or seventh man. Now a starter again, she leads the team in total games played and has grabbed 88 rebounds in those 21 games. In Big East play, Edwards has the height advantage on defense, giving her the ability to grab extra rebounds. 

ASSISTS LEADER

Senior Olivia Nelson-Ododa, Winder Georgia (UConn Athletics)

Here is the most surprising team stat this season. Ododa leads the Huskies in assists with Evina Westbrook following close behind. In her 19 games this season, Ododa averages 4.1 assists per game. She has 77 total so far this season. 

ASSISTS PER GAME LEADER

Sophomore Paige Bueckers, Hopkins Minnesota (UConn Athletics)

Even though sophomore Paige Bueckers has been out with a knee injury since early December, she still has the highest assists per game average. Prior to her injury in the Notre Dame game, Bueckers was averaging 6.2 assists per game. She had 8 against Minnesota. Bueckers led the Huskies last season in assists, averaging 5.8 per game. Her career-high was 14 against Butler on February 27th, 2021. 

BLOCKS LEADER

Senior Olivia Nelson-Ododa, Winder Georgia (UConn Athletics)

Olivia Nelson-Ododa owns the stats sheet so far this season. She has really grown as a player during for career for the Huskies. At 6'5, Ododa has one of the longest wingsspans of the team alongside Dorka Juhász, Amari DeBerry, Piath Gabriel, and Aaliyah Edwards. Ododa averages 1.8 blocks per game with 53 on the season thus far. She earned her career-high 8 against Xavier on Jan. 15th. 

STEALS LEADER

Senior Evina Westbrook, Salem Oregon (UConn Athletics)

Evina Westbrook leads the Huskies with total steals on the season. Playing in all 21 games so far, Westbrook has gone from causing her own turnovers to forcing steals and turnovers on her opponents. She has 30 on the season, with Ododa and Williams close behind. 

STEALS PER GAME AVERAGE LEADER

Sophomore Paige Bueckers, Hopkins Minnesota (UConn Athletics)

Though Paige Bueckers is still recovering from her knee surgery, she is steals per game average leader. She also led the Huskies in her freshman campaign. She has averaged 2.7 steals PG during her six games early this season. 

MINUTES LEADER

Senior Evina Westbrook, Salem Oregon (UConn Athletics)

Evina Westbrook has played 657 minutes in all 21 games so far this season. With a mix of starting roles or sixth man placements, Evina has put in the time and effort in her fifth year as a player. She averages 31.3 minutes per game coming off the bench.

MOST SCORED THREE-POINTERS IN A SINGLE GAME

Freshman Azzi Fudd, Arlington Virginia (UConn Athletics)

Freshman Azzi Fudd had her best career game last weekend against Tennessee. In the first 13 seconds, Fudd hit a three! She went 7-9 on the arch, scoring 21 of her 25 points off of a brilliant start. She leads with 7 made of the team's 13.


MOST BLOCKS IN A SINGLE GAME

Who other than Olivia Nelson-Ododa could take down Xavier with blocked shots? She had a career-high 8 on Jan. 15th, which put her onto the all-time Huskies block list.



MOST ASSISTS IN A SINGLE GAME

It is a three-way tie for most assists in a single game. Yes, there may have been a game where a single Huskie had more than 5 assists, which was Paige with 8 against Minnesota. For the team as a whole, the Huskies had 25 against Butler on Jan. 12th. Ododa, freshman Amari DeBerry, and sophomore Nika Mühl each had 5 against Butler. Almost every Huskie made an assist in that game.


MOST FREE-THROWS IN A SINGLE GAME

The Huskies have had two games where they have scored 16 total free throws. The first was against Arkansas where the Huskies made 16 of 25 attempts at the line. Christyn Willaims went 6-11, with Huskies shooting at 64%. The next was against UCLA, where UConn shot at 57.1% at the line. Both Evina Westbrook and graduate-student Dorka Juhász scored 5. 


These statistics are updated through Feb. 13th, prior to the Marquette game. An updated version will be out before the Big East Tournament & again before the NCAA Tournament in March.
